I have no excuses.
What can I say? Sometimes, particularly, at times when one suffers from a disease that makes one prone to lack of motivation and procrastination, one fails to update one’s blog from time to time.
All I can do is apologize for my absence, and fill you in a little on what I’ve been up to in the past few months!
As you may know from my previous post on mental health awareness, I suffer from both depression and anxiety. I have been taking many steps to combat these issues recently. The whole process has been largely one of trial and error, with an extra side of error. However, where there is darkness, there must also be light! I have been fortunate enough to [re]discover that one of my main passions in life is being around/working with animals. I have always been a lover of animals of all kinds, but I never took time to put two and two together and notice the correlation between being around animals, and the general increase in my mental state. Growing up, I had a golden retriever, who was without a doubt my best friend for the entire time we had him. When he passed away just about 2 years ago, my mental health really took a dive.
Through some very fortunate circumstances, I was able to find myself in a new job, and I have been working as an assistant and apprentice of sorts at a family run dog grooming salon. Getting to be around so may dogs each day is unbelievably soul-healing, to say the least, and since I tend to excel in jobs where I get to work with my hands and be creative, it’s been a great fit for that side of me as well!
I was also lucky enough to be able to dog-sit this guy for a while.
Jack, the shihpoo, is an old friend, who I hadn’t seen for many years. He seemed warm up QUITE quickly to our little apartment, particularly our living room couch! Regardless, it was such a joy to get to spend time with him again. There is no question that dogs have such a powerful effect on our moods, and walking through the local park with him brought me a much-needed sense of peace that I hadn’t felt in the 2 years since my dog passed away. The swarm of face-licks wasn’t an awful thing to wake up to, either!
In other news, I have spent the past few weeks preparing for a [slightly smaller] new furry addition to our home.
I had spent a lot of time doing research to find a pet that would provide me with companionship, but also be affordable to take care of. I came to find that pet rats are actually the perfect solution! Now, stay with me here, I know I probably lost a lot of you there, but rats actually make fantastic pets. They are EXTREMELY clean animals(they groom themselves more times a day than cats!), they are super intelligent (they can be litter trained, and they can be taught several tricks, including responding to their own names!), and, most importantly, they are SUPER sociable, affectionate, loving, and easy to bond with, almost like a pocket-sized dog!
Over the past few weeks I have been gathering supplies for their home. I have just about everything set up now and the boys are set to arrive home in just about two weeks! I couldn’t be more excited to have critters in my life again!
I look forward to updating you on more goings-on in my life as events unfold. I do already have several new posts planned, so stay tuned, so I won’t leave you hanging! Lets never be apart for so long again!
