While I was on a roll with redoing my living room coffee table, I thought I’d tackle another DIY project in my home I’d been wanting to get at for a while – our kitchen table! If you didn’t already know, I moved into my grandmother’s apartment after she passed away. This was a lifesaving arrangement for me, in my early twenties and just out of college with not much of a budget, as the place was already furnished. The downside? Most of the furniture was, as I’m sure you can guess, not the most up to date. The kitchen table is a perfect example.
As you can tell in these photos, the kitchen itself is BEAUTIFUL and lets in a TON of light, which makes it a great place to sit in the morning with a cup of tea and browse through Pinterest (my morning ritual!)! I’ve lived with and known this table for my entire life. It’s a great table, but the dark pattern on its surface isn’t exactly my favourite.
I’ve wanted a marble kitchen table for as long as I can remember, at least ever since I’ve been mentally designing my dream apartment! However most of the options out there aren’t exactly at a price point that is within my reach. Or at least, they weren’t until I discovered THIS handy DIY hack I’m about to share with you!
I had been looking for some marble-patterned con-tact paper to rig up some sort of photo-taking surface on a piece of foam-board for a while, and I ended up purchasing this brand (affiliate link) off Amazon. Just before I checked out, it dawned on me that con-tact paper might be the perfect solution to my kitchen table dilemma! It’s easy to “install,” adheres well, is DIRT cheap, and holds up well against stains and grime, since you can just use a washcloth to wipe it up – perfect for the kitchen!
I ended up purchasing 2 rolls – one for my photo set-up, and one for my table project. I’m glad i did, because I ended up needing just a little more than what was in one roll for my table! Make sure you’re a smart DIY-er and measure your surface first, friends!
Folks, I’m not kidding when I say this was one of the easiest DIY projects I’ve EVER tackled. I was SUPER surprised. The whole thing took less than an hour to complete. I just measured strips the length of my table, cut them, and adhered carefully, making sure they were straight. I also cut out smaller pieces for the sides of the table. The great thing about working with con-tact paper is that if you make a mistake or don’t adhere it properly, you can just pull it back up and fix it, and it wont rip, or lose its stickiness. I would HIGHLY recommend using something like a credit card or a metal ruler to smooth out any air bubbles though, as this was the one tricky thing I found about working with it!
Here is my BEAUTIFUL table now!
Considering I spent less than 20 dollars (15 per roll, but I only used a little bit of the second roll!), and only about an hour of labour, I’d say I got a pretty DARN good deal! I did a fairly mediocre job on the side pieces though, so I may redo those in the future as they are a little rough. I can’t comment on the lasting power yet, as it’s only been a few days, but I will be sure to keep you guys updated on how it holds up!
I now have a beautiful space where I actually WANT to sit and do work every day! (I’m writing this blog post on it right now!)
I’m SUPER happy with the finished project and I can’t wait to spend lots of time in my kitchen now! Have you ever DIY-ed something with con-tact paper? How did it go? Share your thoughts with me/ tweet me a picture!
